England's first constituted regional carnival network is hosting a conference designed to encourage carnival artists and organisations to maximise on the creative opportunities presented by the build up to the Olympics.
The one-day conference hosted by Carnival Network South East will be held in Brighton on 24 April. Attendees can look forward to networking and workshops about sector news, disability in carnival arts, and practical tips for sharing resources in a recession. Samba band, Unified Rhythm, will also play on the day. Carnival Network South East was established in January 2009 to bring together south east carnival practitioners, event organisers and community arts groups to network, share ideas and information and help professionalise the sector. Members of the regional network include Carnival Learning Centre on the Isle of Wight, Oxford’s Cowley Road carnival organisers East Oxford Action Charity, and Same Sky, whose premises are being used for the conference and who are well known locally for their annual Brighton's Children's Parade and Burning of the Clocks events. Conference organisers Takepart Arts urge anyone interested in carnival arts to come along. 'The event is aimed at carnival artists, organisations and all those interested and involved in the carnival sector from across the country but particularly the south east,' said Takepart Arts Project Coordinator Suzi Dent. 'It should be a fun and informative day.' Last year Carnival Network South East received Arts Council England, South East funding to enable it to respond to creative opportunities within the Cultural Olympiad and beyond. The Carnival Network South East Conference is being held on 24 April 2010, 10.45am - 5.30pm, at Same Sky, The Old Post Office, 1 College Road, Brighton BN2 1JA, with a reception to follow at 5.30pm. |
